By Trappe Fire Company No. 1
January 30, 2020

At around 6:30 AM on Thursday morning, January 30th, an emergency dispatch was received for a serious traffic accident with injuries on Westbound Route 422 in the area of mile marker 184.1 in Upper Providence Twp.

Shortly after dispatch the assignment was upgraded to a vehicle rescue. Additional updates were indicating a tractor trailer had overturned on 422 and the occupant was trapped in the vehicle . Initially Utility 93 arrived on location with Lieutenant 93 establishing RT422 Command, and advising that the accident had all lanes completely blocked on 422 Westbound, and that the highway would need to be shut down to traffic.

Arriving units found that more than one vehicle was involved, and that the driver of a white pick-up truck was not only injured and in need of immediate medical attention, but was also trapped in the vehicle. EMS units from Lower Providence MICU 322 and Trappe MICU 324, along with Engine 93 arrived on location, stabilized and secured the vehicle and patient, and began extrication operations. Engine 93 with the assistance of Black Rock Vol Fire Co. and Royersford Fire Department removed the drivers door, pushed the drivers dash, and completed a full roof removal.

Due to the extent of the injuries the driver sustained, a EMS Helicopter was dispatched and Collegeville Fire Company established a landing zone on RT422. The patient was transfered by ground EMS to the helicopter to transfer the patient to an specialized trauma appropriate care facility.

Crews worked for several hours, along with Sate and Fire Police to clear the accident and reopen RT422.
